Sat back and forth between a nearly perished deckchair and the sturdy iron barstool at my kitchen island, I’ve spent hours recalling the past. These recollections follow me to bed. On Stack haunted nights, as I attempt to keep corpselike, on my back, masked eyes facing the vaulted ceiling, I invariably spiral through a phantasmagoric vortex of hypnagogic memory. The chittering fan above swirls histories throughout Hollywood seasons. In the small hours of this morning, as metallic clatter and schizophrenic musings rang in the alley behind my home, I realized that, thirty-five years ago, our clothes were atrocious. Our clothes weren’t oversized. They were ill-fitting. The 40” waist on the old work pants pilfered from my grandfather and the preferred XXL sized Give Me Convenience or Give me Death tee you might see me wearing if you flip open the original Dork sleeve are entirely unflattering, given my fifteen year measurements.

That slovenly look was already trending its way into my wardrobe at the time of AFI’s first performance at the local amphitheater but what I intuitively chose for that debut fit my frame; the skull print Life’s A Beach shorts were carried over from the ’80s. My small Crow tee shirt was new. The four-parter comic book series was only two issues deep. Any schlocky film adaption seemed an impossibility for such an underground work. Between ’89 and ’92, every Halloween morning I would paint that antihero’s black smile over mine. As my open trench blew through the breezeways of our high school (a layer I’d consistently wear while out of costume), I’d only be asked “are you a clown?”

As I recall, the label was started to give Screw 32 a home. Despite being a big East Bay draw, they couldn’t find a label. AFI shared this dilemma. Watching me struggle with our own search, my good friend Doug (guitarist of Screw 32 — with whom it felt like we shared every other local bill from ’93-’97) put in a good word with Wingnut’s owner. Josh, a member of the infamous Insaints, signed us. He played bass next to Miriam when she’d made love to a promiscuous banana on stage at one of my first 924 attendances. His credentials were there.

Answer That and Stay Fashionable was released in the summer of ’95. Shadowing the Swingin’ Utters’ van, we toured on it extensively. After multiple instances of our first LP going out of print we told Mr. Nut that we were moving on. Not being able to sell our record on the road not only compromised our limited gas funds and five dollar food per diems but prevented showgoers from having our music. Getting our music into distant hands was the whole point of being on any label. Of course, after severing with Wingnut, we were again confronted with our initial problem. No one wanted to sign AFI.

Adam Carson still has the rejection letters: Sub Pop, Revelation, Victory, Epitaph… we didn’t fit anywhere. The Lookout! rejection still hurts. Pete Giberga, however, was very interested in signing us. Jim Guerinot, then the manager of Rancid, Offspring, No Doubt, and his first artist, Social Distortion, had hired him to do A&R for Time Bomb. We all loved Mike Ness, were tight with Rancid, and in ’95 all of those bands were different versions of massive. None were on Jim’s inchoate label. In fact nary an artist was, but even without a single release in their catalog we figured their offer was worth exploring… especially because we had but one other option.

My suspicions were correct. Last night was special. Currently, it is my morning: 2:27 pm. “Lisztomania” lilts from a business district friendly playlist. Like a mess to the masses, I’m the sole sipper sat at the amoebic, reclaimed wooden community table of Temple Roasters. I’m a bit banged up from yesterday’s show. My more resilient, nearly vintage, rose Macbook Air charges as I revel in the ubiquity of grown-up coffee and vegan pastries. 2026 allows for much greater ease of awakenings on the road. I skipped the orange peel muffin. The sympathetic barista behind me confirmed that they are potently sweet. I’d eyed them. Even through the glass case I could feel their bite like supernovas upon my teeth. Guided by the better poetry of an oat milk cortado, I’ll recount a bit of April 23rd as I await my Lyft to the airport.

I’m not over it… clearly. :) I doubt I’ll ever be healed, but the details of such scarring times are simply too bleak to Stack. Many of the beloved who saw me through those sulfuric days now wear a silver rabbit about their necks. At my request, Rusty Pistachio forged a small batch of precious pendants. On 6/6/06 I gifted a cabal of resilient friends souvenirs to commemorate their survival of my ’05 lugubriosity. To Stacy Fass, who housed me both physically and emotionally during that time, I gave a golden hare covered in diamonds. My lawyer-cum-life consigliere is not reading this, but some of you who were at my side then are… and I love you so.

As it turns 20, I’ve contemplated DU; given the grind of its creation, I’m shocked that record is as good as it is. Of course, it’s neither my nor AFI’s best work, but hey — it was so in ’06. I’m ever grateful that so many great songs came out of that miserable period. These days, I still enjoy the DU moments of our set list — yes, on the right night, even Miss Murder (Albuquerque, these lashes are battin’ at you)! In ‘05 however, it was December every day. With damaged cords, I was echolocating my way through a vertiginous rabbit hole that jagged toward, away, or more often straight through desperate songs. Thankfully the path ended in an eternal triskele, though as I was rasping my way out, I thought I’d never see the light at the end of that icy tunnel. In ’05, I sought that light nightly.

While recording DU, if Jerry Finn didn’t have me booked for the vocal booth the next day, I’d hit the town. The club kids, door guys, street rats and 3:00 AM soyrizo servers of ’05 Los Angeles knew me well. I’ve plans of Stacking up some of the Hollywood hysteria that delivered me from the pressures of AFI’s first Interscope release later this year. For now, I will detail escape I found in a different land — a land oft-derided that offered me much joy amidst the misery. Stackers, grab your SPF, we’re going to Orange County!

Our West Hollywood clouds were a surrealist pastel of coral and rose. A cyan aether interwove their billows. Caliginous or nacreous, these are the heavens that hold me. I am the tone of that decade. In my archive Yohji brushstroke shorts and the pink FW/25 Rick tank that my generous brother gifted me for Santa Day, I gazed through my windshield at the looming beauty. It was a perfect setting for the night’s plans. Imagining that breathtaking sky printed on a pleated Antony Price suit (rest in style, fabulous man), I swiped open the sunroof and whirred toward the theater. A classic Hughes film was screening early; the first of a double feature with Pump Up the Volume. I’d truncated my workout to make it in time; an emotionally trying edit but I had to attend. It had been years since I’d seen either movie on film.

Through laptop, I am better framed. The app’s camera malfunction left me no choice but to contort myself via iPhone thusly; posed in a front shoulder raise, gripping 220 grams of rose gold technology, I tried to appear poised. Adam Ant scolded me as I readjusted the libertine lock. My hair was standing but would it deliver? It’s kind of tough to tell a scruff… I paused the cassette in my head. I was in a yellow cab. The back seat smelled of exhaust and cheap perfume. To my relief, the wind soon dissipated the mephitis, and with it my slight nausea. I had rolled down the windows, despite the weather. Clouds hung over the highway, pissing rain as my driver sped further from O’Hare. Shot shocks jounced us over the highway. Only moments into our commute, an impossible line of traffic charged toward us like a train in reverse. The city was still miles out. There was no way I was checking into my hotel anytime soon. Ever beleaguered by modern travel, I sighed before my driver exclaimed, “I got you!” We cut left. The exit looked to be a mile ahead. Upon the semblance of a shoulder, we blazed past endless vehicles parked in the fast lane. “Fuck yes.” I uttered appreciation for the recklessness. In the moment, I preferred a Midwestern crash to asphyxiation via carbon monoxide and Lucky You. “Back it,” I plainly maintained, over the whipping wind. The driver’s boisterous laugh was rich with knowing. In minutes we were on the offramp, headed for inner city gridlock.

As we crept through Chicago, my great driver told me he was from Nigeria, that Kennedy Expressway was ill-built for such influx, and that Mexican Independence Day was enough to harshly impede anyone from driving anywhere, let alone the yearly rock festival. Suddenly, he pulled to a curb. Green, white, and red streamers hung from the storefronts. Mylar and latex balloons of the same colors, strung and untethered, floated by. Throngs of the inebriated joyously marched the sidewalks. “The streets are blocked. I can’t get you all the way to the hotel. You should get out here. It’s two blocks that way,” he pointed. “You ok?” A burst of brass erupted from a nearby distance. A shirtless man in golden body paint stared through me and shrieked. I looked back to the driver from the sonic assault. “I’m ok.” I wasn’t really.
